SMART BUILDING INFRASTRUCTURE

SMART BUILDING INFRASTRUCTURE

H. Lüdi + Co. AG's designs and products helped four clients achieve their current and future goals and meet/exceed sustainability and efficiency standards in 2020-2022.

HL-X-SPACES™ is a design principle originally developed for efficient room development in laboratories, but also valid for buildings with office and mixed-use areas and different performance requirements. It is defined in specific versions for offices as HL-X-OFFICE™ and laboratory applications as HL-X-LAB™.

HL-X-SPACES™ for office, lab (BSL1,2,3), and manufacturing is the first system available, delivering the new standard Lab 4.0, a fully integrated and digitized prefabricated turnkey solution in which every component can be controlled and monitored externally - in real-time. It is a regenerative design for a functional, circular economy solution with the capacity to develop and maintain resilient and flourishing ecosystems. It is the first hybrid completely integrated and engineered infrastructure, including ventilation, heating + cooling, light, and a media supply system - with scientifically proven energy-reducing and health and safety technology.

Achieving "speed to market," budget certainty, and flexibility by being a prefabricated and modular system committed to environmental sustainability with a focus on digitization.

For example, it allows for the simple conversion of "dry labs" to "wet labs" and visa-versa to accommodate current research needs. Furniture is easily rearranged for different work styles since it is entirely independent. Fume hoods can change positions within the space, and cleanrooms can also be added. HL-X-SPACES™ adapts itself with different media carriers, room partitions, air conditioning, and lighting options, resulting in zero downtime - a space that is planned today must meet the requirements of tomorrow.

SINERGIA

The new cantonal administration building "Sinergia" in Chur, Switzerland is the largest building in eastern Switzerland that meets the standard Minergie-P-Eco fulfilled. The building operates significantly less than the energy efficiency standard limit with the installation of HL-X-LAB™'s heating, cooling, and lighting solution.

HL-X-LAB™ was installed to meet the special requirements to easily adapt to frequent room changes, ventilation needs, and flexible distribution of the various gases, water, and electricity. It effortlessly helped award "Sinergia" the highest standards.

With an overall score of 5.7, "Sinergia" has received the highest rating in the history of certification and sets new standards for sustainability in building construction. "Sinergia" is also impressive in terms of energy, as it fully complies with the Minergie-P-Eco® standard and the "2000-Watt Site" certification, which guarantees proof of the sustainable use of resources and emissions for the construction and operation of the building, as well as for future-oriented everyday mobility depending on the location. In addition, the project received the highest sustainability rating with the award of SNBS Platinum certification and a top rating of 5.7, which is unique in Switzerland.

EAWAG FLUX EMPA

With six floors, 40 rooms, and a whole lot of technology, the building, designed by Halter AG with the architectural firm Fugazza Steinmann & Partner, includes a basement and five floors above ground on a floor area of around 30 by 31 meters. In accordance with the federal government's role model function, the latest technologies and concepts of sustainable construction were applied. HL-X-LAB™, an innovative laboratory ventilation system is used to achieve striking energy savings with decentralized combi recirculation air units, HL-X-UBOX™ enhanced with UVC equipment to deactivate microorganisms such as viruses, bacteria, pathogens, molds, etc. The building is certified according to MINERGIE-ECO®.

"All this required an expansion and renewal of the existing infrastructure, as well as additional laboratories and office space for researchers, lecturers, and learners and our courses," says Rik Eggen, Deputy Director of Eawag, emphasizing the need for the new building. "We are very pleased that, thanks to the FLUX, we will now be able to fulfill our mandate in a spatially secure manner in the future."

H.Lüdi + Co. AG completed the new construction of this multifunctional laboratory building with four laboratory floors and 21 laboratory rooms. To be used as individual laboratories or open space zones depending on the purpose of research or training. All laboratories are equipped with the latest generation of media ceilings and modular media columns, HL-X-LAB™ / HL-X-SPACES™ LABORATORY 4.0.

HENGRUI

Jiangsu Hengrui Pharmaceuticals Co. Ltd. is China's largest pharmaceutical company, as ranked by market value, and established a subsidiary in the Greater Zurich Area in September 2021. Hengrui Europe Biosciences AG sees itself as a startup and focuses on innovative, antibody-based biotherapeutics and mRNA medicinal products. With this spin-off, Hengrui is strengthening its engagement in Switzerland. Hengrui ranks 21st worldwide* and employs 28,000 members of staff, of whom around 5,000 work in research and development. Its activities focus on oncology but also include metabolic, autoimmune, and cardiovascular diseases.

* According to the Global 1000 Pharmaceutical Companies Report published by the investment bank Torreya, Hengrui ranks 21st out of the top global pharma companies in 2020.

In Zurich, Hengrui Europe Biosciences is establishing an innovative antibody discovery platform in order to introduce new therapeutic possibilities in oncology and immunology. Greater Zurich is the ideal location for this type of research-based work with significant expansion plans, according to Slavoljub Milosevic. He is at the helm of the startup in his capacity as Vice President, Head of the European Research Center, Biologic Drug Discovery.

Sixty percent of the total area of around 1,300 square meters is dedicated to laboratory infrastructure. Hengrui purchased a new building built for office space with minimal floor-to-ceiling height. H.Lüdi + Co. AG was awarded the job in May 2022. Hengrui wanted the HL-X-SPACES™ // LAB + OFFICE system to attract the best talent in the scientific community, and for its flexible, pre-fabricated, plug-n’-play, energy efficient/sustainable, cost-saving, and "speed to market" capabilities. The system was custom designed for the low ceiling height. H.Lüdi installed the design in September, and the new Hengrui space in Zurich was operational in October of 2022 - completed and operational in 5 months!

Pharmaceuticals and Diagnostics Headquarters

HL-X-LAB™ was installed at a Swiss multinational healthcare company: Pharmaceuticals and Diagnostics Headquarters, to convert existing laboratory space and create a highly flexible laboratory infrastructure for short-term change of use. The entire laboratory area is subject to constant change regarding the division of common areas and BSL-2 areas. For this purpose, flexible system partition walls are moved in the laboratory during ongoing operation.

The difficulties with this project lay in particular with the low amounts of air available from the existing building, which only allows a three times air change rate. This challenge could be met using decentralized combination air recirculation units, HL-X-UBOX™.

All laboratory areas are equipped with the latest generation of media ceilings and modular media columns for workplace supply. In addition, movable partition wall systems have been installed for short-term zone changes.
